Explaining The Electric Aga Cookers

As the years have progressed, AGA Rangemaster have adapted their original cooker to accommodate the modern lifestyle and changing needs.

Even when you think you have nailed down a choice of fuel, you still have to decide which electric model you are going to choose! We've broken them down into sections below to help you understand the differences.

HEAT STORAGE RANGE COOKERS (traditional)

These are the cookers that we regularly recondition and bring back to life! They are the traditional 'always on' version and give off constant warmth to the room in which it's situated.

HOW THEY WORK

The principle is always the same - radiant heat and conduction. This has been the same since Dr Gustaf first invented it in 1922. It contains electrical elements which replace the typical gas/oil fuel supply. These elements create the heat that dissipates around the cooker, providing the various cooking temperatures in different ovens and hot spots. You can control this heat source by adjusting the controls and turning them down to reduce the temperature of the whole cooker etc.

COOKER OPTIONS

There are three versions of the electric heat storage models - the 13amp, the 30amp and the well-loved ElectricKit.

30amp

This works by pulling an electric charge overnight when the tariff tends to be cheaper, then storing this heat. We do not stock or refurbish 30amp models due to issues with their control boards, fans and other consumable parts.

13amp

This uses a large electric element which pulls the same amount of energy as a kettle. It pulls this charge whenever it needs to top up heat throughout the day. 13amp models that are installed by professional engineers, are installed with lots of ceramic fibre insulation around the ovens and beneath the top plate to keep the heat inside the cooker and reduce the amount of times your element has to pull a charge. As there is no combustion, no flue is needed and the cooker can be room-venting.

Our refurbished 13amp Range Cookers come with a timer socket to allow your cooker to turn off in off-peak times (overnight) and switch on to top up the heat, ready for breakfast. Customers usually program 3-4 cycles during the day where the cooker turns off, the ovens and hotplates use residual heat to cook, then they are topped up after and hour or two to maintain temperature.

FLEXIBLE ELECTRIC RANGE COOKERS (modern)

These modern versions of the famous cooker are more flexible by incorporating separate elements into the build.  You can choose to have all ovens and hotplates on (to heat the home) or switch them off and use them as and when needed.

HOW THEY WORK

Individual electric elements are embedded in the cast iron parts (ovens and hotplates) to provide flexibility. These can be operated by the control panel inside the ash pit door.

COOKER OPTIONS

Total Control

These models come with a touchscreen panel (very modern!) to allow independent control of the elements. You can program the ovens or hotspots to turn on automatically  whenever you need which is perfect for your morning coffee!

Dual Control

Similar to the Total Control, but you are a bit more limited. The hobs can be controlled separately from the ovens but the ovens are controlled together (aka, either off or on). Customers have chosen the Dual Control in the past for the slumber mode which allows the Aga Range to be brought up to temperature faster than normal.

ElectricKit

This is one of the most-loved controllable options. It is a perfect in-between of the traditional "always on" models and the controllable newer models. There are 3 elements (in 2 oven models) - two under the hot plate/simmer plate and one between the top and bottom ovens. The top oven is programmable to a specific temperature and the bottom oven will be around 60c below that temperature. The two hot plates on the top are independently controlled via a knob marked 1-6. The max temperature of these are 300c so you'll have all the heat you need! The biggest disadvantage is the reduced ambient warmth it produces to the surrounding room. You can leave the ovens on a lower temperature (comparable to the Dual Control's "slumber" mode, to provide a little background heat to the room).

Model Ovens Controls Programmable?
13amp 2, 3 or 4 Whole cooker temperature set by a 0-6 dial No (on/off timer available)
Dual Control 3 or 5 Hotplate and Ovens can be controlled seperately Yes
Total Control 3 or 5 Hotplates can be individually controlled. Ovens on or off. Yes
ElectricKit 2 or 4 Hotplates can be individually controlled. Ovens on or off. Yes

Dual Control and Total Control cookers are rare for us to refurbish because of their young age. We currently choose not to take these into our workshops because we solely refurbish the traditional models to oil, gas, 13amp electric or ElectricKit.
